your first recording — studio
From a fresh install to a finished transcript in about five minutes.
This tutorial takes you from a fresh install to a finished, searchable transcript. You need the yapyap installer, ten minutes, and something to say. No account and no key — the free week starts on its own.
open yapyap
Install yapyap and open it. Yap, the straw mascot, greets you with "hello, I'm yap". Click hi yap.
The wizard asks for no permissions. yapyap asks for each permission later, at the moment it needs one.
let Yap get a brain
Yap explains lenses, then says it is "all straw and no brains" and offers to download models. Click get a brain.
The button shows the download size for your machine. If you want a different size, click I'll pick my own and choose essential, featherweight, balanced, performance, or studio. One preset is tagged best for your machine.
The download continues in the background. You do not have to wait for it.
answer the telemetry question
Yap asks for permission to send anonymous usage counts. Choose sure, go ahead or no thanks. The default is off, and nothing else ever leaves your machine.
land on the home screen
Click record something on the last wizard step. Home shows one big round start recording button. Under it sits the setup line: your microphone and the transcription language.
start recording
Click start recording. Your OS now asks for microphone access — this is the first time yapyap needs it, so this is when it asks. Allow it.
Speak for half a minute. Say a few names and a date, so the pipeline has something to find. Press ↑ to watch the live transcript appear while you talk.
mark a moment
Click mark this moment while you speak. A toast confirms "Marked at 0:XX". Marks become flag pins on the transcript timeline.
stop
Click stop recording, or press ..
watch the pipeline work
Confetti — that was your first recording. Yap points at a small dot and explains: "Listen, recognise, understand, insight — four steps". The dot is your pipeline. When it settles, the recording has a transcript, speakers, a title, and lens results.
If the brain download from step 2 has not finished, the pipeline waits for it. Home says "your brain is still arriving" in the meantime.
open your recording
Press R to open the recordings list and click your recording. You see the transcript, your mark as a flag pin, and the lens results. Everything you can do with the recording is behind the Actions button (⇧⌘K).
