your first recording — go
Set up the phone app and capture your first note anywhere.
yapyap go is the phone companion: it records, and it hands the audio to your desktop over your own wifi. This tutorial sets it up and captures your first note. Pairing with a desktop is optional — the phone records fine on its own.
say hi
Install yapyap go and open it. Yap greets you with "hey, I'm Yap." Tap set up my phone.
allow the microphone
The step "first, the mic" explains why the app needs your microphone. Tap continue and allow the OS prompt.
If you deny it, the wizard offers open Settings and skip for now.
pick a transcription model
The step "words, on device" lets your phone transcribe on its own, without a desktop. Pick a model:
| model | size | good for |
|---|---|---|
| tiny | 32 MB | fastest, rough around the edges |
| base | 60 MB | the sweet spot for voice notes |
| small | 190 MB | most accurate, slowest download |
| parakeet | 356 MB | the desktop's engine — english + european languages only |
Tap continue. The download keeps running while you finish the wizard. You can also skip for now and pick a model later in Settings → Transcription.
pair your desktop (optional)
The step "now, your desktop" scans your wifi. If yapyap studio runs on the same network, your desktop appears as a pair row. Tap it, then click Allow in the dialog that opens on the desktop.
No desktop nearby? Tap skip for now. You can pair any time later — see pairing & sync.
record
Tap start recording on the last step. The big button shows a timer. Talk, tap mark moment if something important happens, then tap the button again to stop. The row shows "recording saved".
what happens to the recording
- Paired: the recording syncs to your desktop, which transcribes it with the big models and runs your lenses. The row shows a green check when the handoff is done.
- Not paired: the recording stays on the phone. Open it and tap transcribe to get an on-device transcript — see transcribe on your phone.
