your vault won't move or open
Claiming, moving, or revealing your vault folder failed — what it means and what is still safe.
Your vault is the folder yapyap keeps your recordings, audio and transcripts in. It is the authority: the app's database is only a projection of what is on disk. That is why the vault operations refuse loudly instead of half-finishing.
Nothing on this page loses data. Every vault failure below leaves the files exactly where they were.
"couldn't move your vault"
yapyap copies everything to the new folder, verifies it, and only then switches over. If any step fails the move is abandoned and your library stays at the old location.
- Not enough room. The destination needs as much free space as the vault currently uses, plus a margin. Check the size of the old folder first.
- The destination is not writable. External drives mounted
read-only, network shares that dropped their credentials, and
/Volumespaths on a disk that went to sleep all fail this way. - The destination is inside the current vault. Moving a folder into itself is refused.
- Another app has a file open. A file explorer preview or a media player holding an audio file can block the copy. Close it and try again.
Cloud-synced folders (Dropbox, iCloud Drive, OneDrive) are a bad home for a vault — the sync client rewrites files under yapyap and the verification step will keep failing. Pick a local folder.
"couldn't claim this vault"
A vault folder records which install owns it, so two copies of yapyap cannot write to the same library at once. Claiming takes ownership.
- If the other install is still running, quit it first.
- On a network share, the claim needs write access to the folder itself, not just the files inside it.
- If the folder is read-only, claiming cannot write the ownership marker.
"couldn't open the folder picker" / "couldn't open the folder"
This one is the operating system, not your library. On Linux a missing
xdg-open or portal is the usual cause. You can always type or paste
the path instead of picking it.
if the vault is somewhere else now
Moved the folder yourself, or restored from a backup? Point yapyap at the new path in Settings → Vault → change location. The app rebuilds its index from the files it finds — originals are never deleted to match the database.
