set up hotkeys
Record, dictate, and mark from anywhere — even without the window.
Three shortcuts work system-wide, from any app, even when the yapyap window is closed:
| shortcut | action |
|---|---|
| Ctrl+Alt+R | start a new recording — press again to stop |
| Ctrl+Alt+D | hold to dictate — release to type the words into the app you are in |
| Ctrl+Alt+M | mark the moment in the running recording |
The same actions sit in the tray menu, for the days your hands are on the mouse.
change a shortcut
- Open Settings → preferences → shortcuts.
- Click the row you want to change.
- Press the new key combination. Press Esc to cancel.
If the combination is taken, yapyap keeps the previous shortcut and tells you which action holds it.
turn a shortcut off
Each row has a switch. Off means the key does nothing and the OS gets it back. restore defaults in the section header resets everything.
the in-app keys
Inside the window, the useful ones:
| key | where | action |
|---|---|---|
| ⌘ K | everywhere | open search |
| ⇧⌘K | everywhere | open actions |
| . | home | start a new recording |
| . | while recording | stop |
| R | home | open the recordings list |
| ↑ / ↓ | while recording | show / hide the live transcript |
The full table lives in the shortcut reference.
